1．规则与不规则变化的名词 
对于规则变化的名词，不要误当作不规则变化的名词；对于不规则变化的名词，应牢记其复数形式，不要按规则变化形式在词尾加－s。 
例1．In the United States，inches and_______are still used as units of measurement． 
A．footB．feetC．footsD．feets 
答案为B。foot的复数形式为不规则变化，应为feet。 
有些以希腊、拉丁语为词源的外来词保留其原有的复数形式，而不是通过加s或es构成。应注意其复数形式。 
例2．Changes such as(A) these，which(B) are(C) easily observed，are called phenomenons(D)． 
D 错。phenomenon 的复数为 phenomena。 
2．复合名词的复数 
 合成名词的复数形式，通常只将主体名词变为复数，没有主体名词的只在最后一个词上加复数词尾。 
 例1．The Nazi kept those_________in their concentration camp． 
A．prisoner-of-wars B．prisoners-of-war 
C．prisoners-of-warsD．prisoner-of-war 
答案为B。prisoner为主体名词。 
 例2．After ten years，all those youngsters became_______． 
A．grown-upsB．growns-ups 
C．grown-up D．growns-up 
答案为A。grown-up中没有主体名词，在最后一个词up上加复数词尾。 
由表示性别的 man 和 woman 构成的合成词，各成分全都变为复数。（但若不表示性别时，man， woman不变，如man-eaters［吃人者］）。 
例3．All the_________in the hospital will get a rest tomorrow． 
A．women doctorsB．women-doctor 
C．woman doctorsD．doctors of women 
答案为A。 
3．单、复数同形的词 
常见的单复数同形的名词有 deer，sheep，fish，craft，aircraft， spacecraft，means，species，series， Chinese，Japanese等。 
例1．Red deer_______for about 12 years，although some have been known to live to an age of 20 years． 
A．has livedB．lived C．live D．lives 
答案为C。red deer在该句中表示复数意义。 
另外，dozen 和 score 在表示确切数目时，单复数同形，但表示非确切数目时，用复数形式。 
例2．I’ll take two dozen． 
例3．There are dozens of people about． 
4．只用作复数的名词 
有些名词只用作复数，如cattle，police，clothes，belongings，savings等。 
例1．His cattle________feeding near the forest those days． 
A．are B．was C．is D．were 
答案为 D。 
5．单、复数意义不同的名词 
有些词的单数词义和复数词义可能互不相同，如wood 木材（woods 树林），sand 沙子（sands 沙滩），time 时间（times 时代），interest 兴趣（interests 利益），arm 手臂（arms 双臂／武器）等。 
 
例1．We read through_________of the last meeting． 
A．a minute B．the minute C．the minutesD．minutes 
minutes既可表示"分钟"的复数，也可作"记录"讲。该空处应表示"上次会议的记录"，故选C。表"记录"这一意义时，不能用单数形式。 
6．用连字符连接的名词 
数词与名词用连字符连接起来作修饰成分时，名词要用单数。 
例1．Despite the wonderful acting and well-developed plot_______the movie could not hold our attention．（96．1四级考题） 
A．three-hours B．three-hour 
C．three-hours’D．three-hour’s 
答案为B。
